Dominican Republic

First discovered by Christopher Columbus, the Dominican Republic was described as a beautiful island paradise with high forested mountains and large river valleys. As the first permanent European settlement after Greenland, the Dominican Republic boasts many firsts, including the first cathedral, university, road, and fortress of the Americas. Aside from a rich history, this lively country is a rich amalgamation of Spanish, African, and Haitian influences. The traditional spirited meringue dance originated from here, and in the evenings, its addictive beat pulses through the air in the various nightclubs. Those looking for sun and surf also have plenty to do, and the Dominican Republic’s famous beaches have something for everyone. The east coast features pristine beaches and mangrove swamps, scuba diving and relaxation, while adventure junkies will love the northcoast, where Cabarete (Kite beach) is considered one of the top five kiteboarding beaches in the world. This is where the Kiteboarding World Cup has been held for the last 3 years. Those who want a quiet retreat must be sure to visit Rincon, considered one of the top 10 beaches in the world. This isolated beach has no hotels, no vendors, and is best accessed by boat. Mix with the locals in the south central coast, or view sand dunes and natural pools over in the south west coast. After a day at the beach, try a round of golf, at beautifully groomed greens designed by Jack Nicklaus, or one of the other famous golf designers. Shoppers will find wide assortment of rums, ambers, and other, while risk takers will find many casinos. Whether you want to play, party, relax or explore, the Dominican Republic has a wide selection of activities for all types of interests.

El Pueblecito, North Coast, Dominican Republic
Love it. Not the best idea to wander around on your own but a great place to see.
Santo Domingo, Capital Region, Dominican Republic
Go over to Esperanza, a little town where some of the streets can only be traversed by motorcycle or foot. You will meet some of the most wonderful people here. Sometimes they provide a free clinic to the community and can use all the help they can get. They love friendly visitors.
Juan Dolio, South Coast, Dominican Republic
Great beach to go hang out on for the day or a little longer, but probably not the best place in the DR to spend a long vacation in. Beware of the sea urchins, they are poisonous and numerous
Santo Domingo, Capital Region, Dominican Republic
La Jaragua is definitely the best hotel in the city and, compared to hotel prices in the US, it's really quite reasonable. They serve a very nice full breakfast.
Santo Domingo, Capital Region, Dominican Republic
When traveling around Santo Domingo try the local guaga - it's a bus that gets you around the city for less than $1,
Rio San Juan, North Coast, Dominican Republic
again, great beaches and people. When choosing a resort, consider the ones right on the beach.
Santo Domingo, Capital Region, Dominican Republic
Hot hot hot hot hot hot and beautiful!
Isla Saona, South Coast, Dominican Republic
Typical one day trip if you're in Punta Cana, La Romana, or the surroundings, but it's totally worth it. You can swim in amazingly clear, light blue waters of the Caribbean, have nice food, and come back while having ron coca cola and nice merengue lessons on a boat with far too loud music. Could it be anything more fun??
Santo Domingo, Capital Region, Dominican Republic
you really should all go there its the best!!!!
Sosua, North Coast, Dominican Republic
Although not renown as a diving/snorkelling area. Sosua beach is a fantastic place to swin and snorkel with loads of exotic fish. Pick your spot on the beach and do your best to avoid the sunlounger and restaurant touts, a particular problem at Sosua.
San Felipe de Puerto Plata, North Coast, Dominican Republic
Fly into Puerto Plata; surrounded by beaches. Great place to visit.
San Felipe de Puerto Plata, North Coast, Dominican Republic
The Amber museum is worth a visit. Anywhere else in the town, prepare to be hassled. The town has some interesting parts, but is a little jaded. A trip on the cable car to Mount Isable de Torres is worthile if you have kids, but the walks around the gardens on the top of the mountain are not as good as I had expected. Prepare to be hassled here too, everyone will want to be your guide - you don't need one.
Santa Barbara de Samana, North Coast, Dominican Republic
Go to the beach. La playa!
Pantanal, South Coast, Dominican Republic
Beautiful beaches!! Light sand and nice turquoise water. Delightful people, great vacation spot...
Pantanal, South Coast, Dominican Republic
Good merengue dancing...and people is great!

Stay at Princess Resorts. Food, Drink and party: The perfect Vacation.
Pantanal, South Coast, Dominican Republic
Lay back, relax, drink a margarita at one of the many all-inclusive resorts... very cheap!!!
Isla Saona, South Coast, Dominican Republic
beautiful blue water and white sand. go for a walk to the right around the bend... theres some nice palm trees leaning over the ocean.
Santo Domingo, Capital Region, Dominican Republic
Its the capital so its pretty big. Stay in the city area, don't wander in the subburbs. Go to the port and find out more about Columbus!
Bayahibe, South Coast, Dominican Republic
O my god, realy relaxin' chillin', bounty bounty bounty !!
Santo Domingo, Capital Region, Dominican Republic
wonderful city. dont drink the water.
San Felipe de Puerto Plata, North Coast, Dominican Republic
Get to know some of the locals, they are extremely friendly and will show you their way of life.
Sosua, North Coast, Dominican Republic
amazing here, great diving in the reef there.
Santo Domingo, Capital Region, Dominican Republic
the cave "los tres ojos" is great!
El Limon, North Coast, Dominican Republic
Make sure that you have a swimming wear because in the falls you can swim. You will go there by horse, the other alternative is to walk but is far away and very difficult. You have to pay for all that, it is not expensive. Don´t forget to give a tip to your escort, he lives from that....
Cabarete, North Coast, Dominican Republic
Wind/Water sports!! And check out the cute shops on the street, there are some good jewellery find there.
Isla Saona, South Coast, Dominican Republic
VERY beautiful! The bounty adverts were filmed on this island a few years ago. It is a lovely place to relax in the sun. The water is crystal clear, and the sea floor is covered in starfish. Lovely for snorkelling or diving a bit further off the shore.
Boca Chica, South Coast, Dominican Republic
Hamaca (Coral Hamaca).
The Hamaca is generally regarded as the best and most expensive property in Boca Chica.

This is a large high-rise hotel, with multiple restaurants, a disco, casino, multiple shops, two pools, and a private beach that is off-limits to anybody not staying at the hotel. It is a full-service all-inclusive fortress and I usually recommend this hotel to first-time visitors to Boca Chica.
Cabarete, North Coast, Dominican Republic
If you are a Wind-Surfer or a Kite-Surfer, you will like Cabarete! Nice wind, nice waves and a lot of sun and party!!!
San Felipe de Puerto Plata, North Coast, Dominican Republic
Casa Colonial in Puerto Plata is a fantastic boutique hotel!! 100% recommendable.
Santo Domingo, Capital Region, Dominican Republic
Santo Domingo, Capital Region, Dominican Republic
A beautiful and interesting city, the oldest in thre New World. Plenty of architectural clues to its history - I recommend a visit to the Alcazar de Colon, the interior accurately reflects the period. You will probably be hassled by people to act as guides if you are on your own, this isn't a bad thing as they don't expect a lot of money and they will take you to areas you may not have found on your own.
Cabarete, North Coast, Dominican Republic
Bayahibe, South Coast, Dominican Republic
Santo Domingo, Capital Region, Dominican Republic
In the capital, dudes will try to shine your shoes for a few bucks.. I didn't want them to as I was wearing sneakers, but they are persistent little kids.. Once I figured I'd be nice and gave one of the kids a buck just for the hell of it.. Well that kid did not stop following me for many blocks, and then some friends joined in assuming I was rich and going to give everyone cash.. Uhm, don't do it.. Unless you are rich and want to be followed by alot of little dudes.... Find other ways to help the community is such is your desire.. It gets dangerous when the older guys notice. Luckily I speak spanish and can speak slang so I spooked them off.....
Isla Catalinita, South Coast, Dominican Republic
Sometimes you can see reef sharks
La Dominica, North Coast, Dominican Republic
Take a few American Dollars, but have Dominican Peso as your main currency. Try to avoid Hotel-Run Casinos, you will probably lose rather than gain.
San Miguel, Capital Region, Dominican Republic
It is a very hot city, busy with buses! there are nice hotels, shopping centers, and access by bus or cars is easy from San Salvador. You can find a lot of activities, going to the close beaches the best in El Salvador, El cuco, Playas Negras.
Las Terrenas, North Coast, Dominican Republic
It is just paradise!
Sosua, North Coast, Dominican Republic
Sosua has an excellent small beach with one house on it.
Cabarete, North Coast, Dominican Republic
Very nice place for surfers!

Special Recommendation:
Have a nice dinner at one of the beachside restaurants...
The tables are set on the beach. There is a huge range of caribbean or european food (seefood, pizza, etc.)
According to friends advice, the nightlife should be very good too (haven't tried it though).
Bavaro, South Coast, Dominican Republic
Bavaro is the town where the most of fancy resorts are located in Dominican Republic, commonly referred as Punta Cana, it is not the real location of Punta Cana. The town has nothing to offer besides the hotels if you're around you'd better take a look to Higuey where you'll find the Alta Gracia church, this city has a bit more of Dominican taste.
Pantanal, South Coast, Dominican Republic
A real paradise for divers...
Santiago de los Caballeros, Inland Region, Dominican Republic
There are the big shopping centers of the northern ireland. At Santiago it feels like .....normal.
San Felipe de Puerto Plata, North Coast, Dominican Republic
the best tourguide was local taxidriver. showed lot of places (rum destilery, slums...). try to find one (criminality rate was very low, when I was there, but be carefull)
Santo Domingo, Capital Region, Dominican Republic
Dancing and nightlife, merengue and other folklore.Donot go along showing off, just be friendly and simple, avoid conversations with people that obviously want something from you and keep talking to you. When you go, for instance, to El Mercado to buy souvenirs, always bargain. You will find lots of restaurants, local food, Italian, French, American, Mexican, Argentinian, German...
Rio San Juan, North Coast, Dominican Republic
No ponen precios bajos. La comida es muy rica.
Bayahibe, South Coast, Dominican Republic
best scuba dive yet in a cave with fresh water it was amazing!!!
San Felipe de Puerto Plata, North Coast, Dominican Republic
Stayed in the Riu Merengue on honeymoon was great complex, Excellent day trips to places like ocean world were u can swim with dolphins, sharks and can interact with sea lions
Punta Cana, Inland Region, Dominican Republic

Samana is a beautiful place but as you will find out it is not the safest place to be as a tourist due to the adverse poverty of the DR but the place has unreal natural beauty and beaches, caves and various other attractions.
Santo Domingo, Capital Region, Dominican Republic
The City of Santo Domingo has numerous museums, most of them are within the Zona Colonial District. Museum of Alcázar Naval Museum of the Atarazanas Museum of the Casas Reales Museum of Duarte Museum of Natural History Museum of Dominican Man

i was very young and i remember only sea, beach and a stupid parrot witch offended me ;)
Jarabacoa, Inland Region, Dominican Republic
When you're in Jarabacoa, make sure you visit one of the famous painters of The Dominican Republic: Jean Girigori. Just ask the people and they will tell you how to get there, for if you miss the sign.
La Sabana, North Coast, Dominican Republic
I loved this trip so much I am going back to the Dominican in 3 Days!!.. Going to try Punta Cana this time! Stay at the Bahia Principe it is awesome!
El Limon, North Coast, Dominican Republic
Famous for it's giant waterfall after a lovely hike or on horseback. We had a couple of great guides- 2 teenage boys who deserve every bit of the tip they get 'cause I'm sure they're not being paid fairly... we swam in under the falls and one of our guides dove off the top (about 100 meters!)! Bring some water to drink and share with your guide as it's pricey at the top. Wear appropriate footware as the path is rocky and wet in places. We got there by renting a scooter/motorcycle in Las Terrenas. Very cool and a great way to spend 1/2 day!
Santo Domingo, Capital Region, Dominican Republic
Great people, very colorful. Avoid side streets and those not very well lit, especially as you move out of the city center and don't speak Spanish.
Cabarete, North Coast, Dominican Republic
By the Hotel Caracol is a very nice Restaurant.
Santo Domingo, Capital Region, Dominican Republic
Dominican people are warm and affectionate. They are also very proud of their heritage and will spare no effort to ensure you have an increable time visiting.
Licey al Medio, Dominican Republic
Don't travel in motorcycles at night.
Santo Domingo, Capital Region, Dominican Republic
Hola, Punta Cana is located outside of Santo Domingo. Me Gusta! Fun Fun Fun! If you find yourself doing what I did and go twice in one year, you know you love a place. I went in March then Sept. Banana boating is a must, but they will turn real fast and toss you off at the end, shh i didnt tell you that! Take a Safari tour on the Outback Safari tours, located at the front desk at most resorts there will be an apple vacations guide there you will be able to book all the tours you may want to go on. On The Outback Safari your first stop is a georgous beach with torquiose blue clear water with big waves. Make sure you grab a boogie board. There is a straw market set up right on the sand.Take advantage of the locals art, it will amaze you! Then you go through a sugar cane field and yes the guide cuts the cane right from the field and lets everyonebody try some, very good, yet has a wood texture for hard to eat, just suck it! As you drive you pass a garage yard, and the smell is terrible i had to hold my nose! Further down the beaten path you will tour an elementry school, and meet the little kids with their cute little uniforms on. They love visitors. Travel up the rigid mountain and smell the sweet flora lingering in the air. Watch out for their countrys national spider, its bigger then a tarantula! Oh yea and the best part about it is while your traveling and sitting in the back of an open truck bouncing around getting your tan on, the guide cracks open coke and sprite and pours rum in it, and there is no drinking age in this country, so drink that dominican rum it has a very dreamy like effect, amazing! Once you are in the middle of the jungle you get out and get to try cocoa straight from the plant, mind you this doesnt taste like hersheys chocolate, it is bitter and gross you would never guess something so tasty could come from such a foul plant. There was fresh coffee beans and they brewed up the strongest coffee you will ever taste, starbucks couldnt make coffee this powerful! Before the tour is over you have lunch at a pavalion in the middle of the jungle, there are dancers dressed in white frilly dresses trimed in blue and red, and a domincan lunch, with rice and chicken and fresh picked fruit! Saona Island is the second tour we went on! This is a MUST DO! You hop on a catamaran and the fun begins from the minute you step on that boat. Rum is passed out, and Merengue music plays, the natives running the boat will grab your hands and make you dance with them. This is all video taped. At the front of the boat there is a next the size of half a tennis court, lay down on it and sunbath and let the water soak you from underneath everytime you hit a wake. It takes about an hour to get to Saona island, but is very exciting with lots of activity! Once you get close to Saona Island a speed boat pulls up and you hope onto that. You zoom over to the island with seashells, and white sand beaches, and crystal clear water. The island is a national park, so it is uninhibited, it is untouched my hotels and condo's and kept very intact. Nature is not allowed to be removed! There are hammocks and picnic tables and shelters. Luch is another carribean treat, the same as The Outback Safari! Lay in the sun and enjoy the amazing view. Once a few hours pass, you hop back on the speed boat and jet over to the sand bar, a place in the middle of the ocean where the water is only about 2-3 feet deep! You jump out of the boat and if you've never seen clear ocean water this is the place to see it! There are starfish everywhere, huge ones that is. Make sure you pick them up, but don't let them up out of the water for too long, or you'll be bringing home a souviner. Saona island should be the first thing on your list!!!
Santo Domingo, Capital Region, Dominican Republic
A well kept secret is the food...Juan Luis Guerra...and the people.
San Felipe de Puerto Plata, North Coast, Dominican Republic
Gute Hotels und viel Ruhe
La Dominica, North Coast, Dominican Republic
Dominican Republic is a lovely country. The people are very welcoming and friendly. The Dominican's who work within the Tourism Industry work very hard for their Peso- so a tip or two is very much appreciated. I would also recommend that if you are fussy or travelling with young children, to stay in at least a 4* Hotel. Food and Hygiene seem to be one of Dominican Republic's weaknesses as some people do complain of food poisoning and in some cases extreme. So maybe research your property and read a few reviews. Most Hotel offer Watersports and in Sosua there is a Waterpark. Horse riding, trekking, scuba diving, jeep tours and day trips are also on offer. If your not afraid of heights -take a helicopter flight! During the weekends and national holidays, you may find yourself waiting for ages to be seated for your meals and the queue to be a tad long. These times are when you will find alot of Puerto Rican, Cuban and Dominican holidaymakers at resort/hotels.
Santo Domingo, Capital Region, Dominican Republic
These people love baseball and even if you aren't a fan you will enjoy a night out at the ball park....cheerleaders on top of the dug out and everything. Need I say more???
Santo Domingo, Capital Region, Dominican Republic

watch for areas like puerto plata...the beaches are dominated by sand mosquitoes...stay away. check out the food before you taste--especially sea food. Do some horse back riding and dune buggy--they're cool

Visit the resting place of Christopher Colombus's remains. Just don't get to close they have armed guards 24/7. It is very interesting to visit the shrine in his honor!
