Barahona is pretty much a shit hole.  The people are very nice, but the tremendous poverty leads many to petty crime.  There are some nice cafes, including  a lovely place across from Magnolia Hotel called....  wel, i forget the name.  The square down the st from there has a nice modern club called Lotus.  Playa San Rafael is a short guagua ride away, towards the Haitian boarder.
