Known more for the political turmoil and traumatic past than the attractions, East Timor (Timor Leste) is one of the newest nations in Southeast Asia. Dili, the country’s capital, is in the process of reconstruction (as is much of the country) after much of it was destroyed, but Portuguese influences in the manner of villa-lined beach roads and other colonial touches remain. Nearby, are a number of beaches perfect for snorkelling and strolling, including the Areia Branc cove, as well as at Atauro Island, situated across from Dili. For a bit more in depth look at the country’s heritage, head out to the islands in the eastern tip, where there are cave paintings in Lautem and in Ilequereque and sleepy villages, or admire the ochre coloured coastal landscape. You can also consider taking a chartered tour out into the sea for some deep sea fishing, or sightseeing tours.

(0) Mini buses in Dili are good way to get around. But sometimes passengers will have their prized chicken with them - especially on way to a cockfight. Good tip?
