The BEST place to see wildlife in the Amazon in Ecuador (and possibly anywhere given it is an IUCN 'biodiversity hotspot') is Pavacachi, on the Rio Curaray, a 200km flight from Shell (Puyo) at the base of the Andes. I've been involved in biodiversity expeditions there for 4 years, and at the request of the Pavacachi community have funded a research / volunteer station, and run community development and wildlife research expeditions. We aim to help the community preserve their massive 53 000 hectares, 120000 acres of primary rainforest by supporting their ecotourism and research activities. We're a social enterprise in the process of becoming a non profit. Check out the wildlife photos over there > and our website. We're genuine, and want to take people to this special place to help the community keep it that way. www.earthsessions.com

I recommend all travelers to take a canoe and plan a trip but not to typical places, but tell the canoe driver to take you to a place where you can see the local life. We did that once and ended up in a marriage in which we had a great party with local people and it was a whole new experience to be in there!
