It's been a while since I was there but locals were fab. We met some really honest people who just wanted to show us their city. Enjoy a turkish coffee and a flavored smoke near the markets. Go to the citadel and be amazed at how you can feel quite alone in this crowded city. Rent a taxi for the day and visit Giza and other close Pyramids and historic areas. You can get good deals on this from some cheap hotels. For a special treat if you are backpaking pay to use the pool at the Mena House Hotel, you can see views of Gisa, this is where Churchill and Roosevelt discussed WWII so is an interesting place to spend a day. Enjoy the food and the peoplel, I loved Cairo!

Don't book your accommodation before you leave home. There are plenty of clean and well equiped backpacker type accommodation at extremely low prices. You can even have your own bathroom and restaurants on site. Most have a person to book local travel at less than half the price as from home too. No notice needed.

3. Laurent's Tip on Dahshur

Dahshur, Cairo & Surrounding Region, Egypt

Dahshur (50 km) south of Cairo is the most southern pyramid site of the Cairo region and has 2 very nice pyramids almost as big as the Giza ones: the red pyramid and the rhomboedral pyramid. Nice desert site off the tourist tracks and hassling vendors. Expect 200 EGP to go there from central Cairo by taxi and return after some bargaining.

Imprescindible en El Cairo; tomar un taxi, visitar el bazar Khan El Khalili, regatea como nunca lo has hecho! visita el Museo Egipcio y la Mezquita de Alabastro. El metro muy limpio y seguro, funciona muy bien.
