Zamalik is a very clean and high class area of Cairo.  It is an island on the River Nile.  The streets are much cleaner than lets say Downtown Cairo.  I would reccommend highly too stay there if you want to stay in an apartment rather than a hotel/hostel. It is central so it doesn't take long to reach to the destination you want to get too.
