Dahshur, Cairo & Surrounding Region, Egypt
Dahshur (50 km) south of Cairo is the most southern pyramid site of the Cairo region and has 2 very nice pyramids almost as big as the Giza ones: the red pyramid and the rhomboedral pyramid. Nice desert site off the tourist tracks and hassling vendors. Expect 200 EGP to go there from central Cairo by taxi and return after some bargaining.

Alexandria, Mediterranean Coast, Egypt
If you are travelling from Alexandria to Cairo on one of evening trains make sure you have planned your journey way ahead of schedule. The evening trains are always delayed due to ...lack of engines:-). I nearly missed my flight from Cairo to Munich because I got stuck at Alexandria train station. For nearly 2 hours we were waiting for a train to turn up so they could pull an engine out and fit it into the train which was going to take me to Cairo.
