Kuusamo was the biggest town in Finland after 2000 for a couple of years - the biggest by the size of the area. It is located near the Russian border, and it is one of the main touristical centres in Finland. With its wild nature, beautiful lakes, hills and forests, it also has the biggest proportion of the summer cottages in Finland. The famous skiing centre Ruka is located 30 km north from the centre, and in summertime the lakes, hiking trail Bear's ring and the natural park of Oulanka are there waiting for you, as well as the canyon lake Julma Ölkky near the Southern border.
