The Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Orthodox Church are state churches, but people are free to follow the religion of their choice. State churches can make legislative proposals to the Parliament, which can be approved or rejected, but not altered.
About 85% of the inhabitants belong to the Evangelical Lutheran Church, and 1% are members of the Orthodox Church. About 12% of the population claim no religious affiliation.
