Alsace People & Culture
Colmar, Alsace, France This lovely town is ideal for an easygoing walk, combined with shopping. The old houses are marvellous! The people there are very friendly and it's a warm atmosphere. Don't forget to eat crepes and all the other great food they sell in the restaurants and at take away stands on the street! Good tip? (+1) Strasbourg, Alsace, France I simply love this City. I come back again and again and again...and in my (atleast 10 times) visits I start out (I even tried to finish my days) by taking the Chanel tour. I have until this date never made it to the end...a very friendly guide does WAKE me up every time to deboard. I am so sorry for the people there, you are not boring and truely friendly. Nevertheless, great sleeping oppertunity for me. Also you should make sure to visit the Cathedral, Petite France, German district, Notre Dame museum and Palais Rohan. Go shopping in Place Kleber and get a seat in a cafe to do some people watching. It is simply great. OH and the food. Prima...French or German after your taste, make sure to get a few wine tastings or do so on the Alsace tour which is great oppertunity from Strassbourg to Colmar. Really enjoy this faboules City. Good tip? (0) Strasbourg, Alsace, France Got loadt though really nice taxi people there!!! Good tip? (0) Riquewihr, Alsace, France Cutest, little village ever! The town is used to tourists, but not overrun. The result? People who understand English and still carry on with their day-to-day activities. Great pastries! Look around - this is a great stop for souvenirs. A necessary stop through the French countryside. Good tip? (0) Riquewihr, Alsace, France Riquewihr, bead of the vineyards Riquewihr lies in the midst of of vineyards and earns rightfully its call as " Bead of the Weinberge". Its houses from that 16. Century form one of the most beautiful examples of architecture of Alsace. A postcard backdrop With its fortress wall, its paved lanes and its beautiful half timbered houses Riquewihr offers a pictorial backdrop. In this small, admirablly well received place everything is harmonious. It is recommendable to come during the week or outside of the season in order to avoid the people masses. Then Riquewihr shows all its treasures: bezaubernde inner courts, beautiful stone houses as well as carefully with flowers decorated wells and jumping wells. The medieval old part of town is absolute a visit worth, also from gastronomischer view. The Rebsorten of the region results in an excellent Riesling as well as two respected large wines, the spores and the beautiful castle. Numerous winegrowers offer inspections of its wine cellars and wine tastings. Good tip? (0) Strasbourg, Alsace, France The cathedral is the monument to see. Just from the outside, it looks incredible. If you can, go there during December to enjoy the Christmas market (thanks to the proximity to Germany and the mix of German-French culture), it is very beautiful! Good tip? Good tip? (0) Strasbourg, Alsace, France If you go during summer don't miss to see the cathedral during the nigth...it will be full of lights accompanied by music Good tip? (0) Strasbourg, Alsace, France There are so many nice things here i don't know where to start! Of course the cathedral and petite france are great. You have a good view over the city from the barage Vauban. The modern art museum, the Alsatian museum and the Planetarium of the university are really worthwile to visit! Go take a stroll in the orangerie park, while enjoying the icecream you bought at the entrance. For going out i would recomman Au brasseur, they brew their own beers and have delicious flamkuechen to go with them, as well as freres Berthom. For dancing i'd suggest la Java! If you want to go sunbathing or swimming in the summer go to the Baggersee! Bikes are good method of transportation (actually the only city outside the netherlands where i feel comfortable on a bike). Good tip? (0) Ribeauville, Alsace, France Ribeauville is an amazing graphic little village amongst green grassy hills with beautiful nature. It is located not more than two hours from the French Alps and it is a great place for hiking. If you go past this place, put it on your GPS or find it on a map and just travel through it. You will be stunned! Guaranteed! I went through this place two years ago when i was travelling to the uk by car and i was amazed. Shame i couldnt stay there a bit longer than a couple of hours. Good tip? (0) Strasbourg, Alsace, France The fastest way to move in strasbourg is either by bike (amazing infrastructure for that) or by Tram. The Trams usually don't stop at traffic lights, the system is so made that if Tram passes they automatically change colour to green! One other strategy to decrease cars.. .only if tickets were cheaper.... Good tip? (0) Strasbourg, Alsace, France if you want to eat something very good, go to LITTLE FRANCE area! Good tip? (+3) Colmar, Alsace, France Colmar is a small town, a bit out of the way for many travelers. But don't let that discourage you. In fact, the small town charm is present from start to finish. You can walk the town courtesy of a walking guide in about two hours.
If you are into medieval art, stop by the Unterlinden Museum. There are medieval frescos and alter pieces from centuries ago when art was part and parcel of religion. And if the museum is not enough, pay attention to the two massive churches. There is also Petite Venise, a mini canal and river that runs through part of the city to form an homage to Venice. The Old Customs House and St Matthieu complete the old architectural tour.
The fare is typical Alscatian - tarte flambees. Good tip? (+1) Colmar, Alsace, France This lovely town is ideal for an easygoing walk, combined with shopping. The old houses are marvellous! I highly recommend it :-) Good tip? (+1) |
