Alsace History

If you go to Colmar, it's an absolute must to got to the Museée Unterlinden because of the Isenheimer Altar: it marks the beginning of Renaissance painting in the German-speaking parts of Europe.

very nice (and small) old-town, nice restaurants and handcraft shops. gets really crowded during holiday seasons but is a great gateway to visit the smaller winemakers of the alsace and the romantic villages of riquewihr, kayserberg or the impressive fortress of haut koenigsbourg.

A nice boat trip on river Ill will give you great overall view of the old city and you will learn about most of its history and architecture. It costs less than 10 euros. You will see European Parliament and Council of Europe also. you can take the bateau mouche (the boat) from the river board near place Madelaine or Quai se Sabre. It lasts about an hour and a half.
