At the geographical and historical heart of Paris, this island in the Seine river, was first inhabited by Celtic fishermen and boat builders (Parisii tribe). It was conquered by Romans in 42. Walls were erected to defend the island from barbaric invasions. People would take refuge on the wall protected island . The king of France, Clovis settles there and his successors order the construction of “Palais du Roi” and Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral. Portion of “Ile de la Cité” was destroyed during the transformations initiated by Baron Haussmann. Fortunately, some buildings of the past such as Notre-Dame de Paris, la Conciergerie, la Sainte-Chapelle (the only vestiges of Palais du roi), l'Hôtel-Dieu (the oldest hospital in Paris) and Palais de Justice (built where Palais du Roi use to be) are still standing.

Travel Tips from people who've been to Ile de la Cite
So many museums/interesting sites covered in such a small area. Take Metro line to Cite stop and turn right, you will see the Saint Chapelle and the Conciegerie, and furthur round the corner is Notre Dame. Avoid the cafes in this area, they're seriously overpriced. Walk behind the metro entrance for a beautiful flower market!
