Travel Tips from people who've been to Versailles
Even if you get to Versailles and the Chateau is closed, there is always the gardens. Meticulously planted, cut and trimmed, they are a site to behold, during any time of year. I was amazed to hear that the reflecting pool is actually wider the further away you get from the Chateau. This is to compensate for depth, thereby making the pool look like it is even all the way down. Amazing..... Here is a brief description taken from the webpage below: Gardens Formal The grounds were laid out geometrically around a main axis, secondary axes, radiating pathways, and circular (or semi-circular) pools known as basins. Everything was symmetrical, if staggered on several levels. Trees were rigourously pruned to create a veritable architecture of vegetation. Closer to the chateau were flowerbeds, or parterres, which would not mask its architectural features and could be enjoyed from the upper floor. The south flowerbed, or Parterre du Midi, was composed of low boxwood hedges bedecked with flowers, while the Parterre du Nord was all boxwood and lawn. In between them, the two ornamental pools of the Parterre d'Eau were ringed with masterpieces of sculpture, namely reclining statues representing the rivers of France.

If you like France History, you would not want to miss to visit Louis XV summer home. (Chateauversailles).  We stayed by the Opera House  and was so easy to get to it.  Tale line8 to BALARD, get off at Invalides and switch to RER C  then  get off at Versailles station.  Make sure u have your passports and if you take the train around 0730,  you'll be one of the first few hundreds visitors ( summer time) to get in.  Otherwise,  the lines will get really long after 1000 am.  The train is 35  minutes ride and will cost 8 euro dollar per person.  Do not take the private tours, it's useless.  The mansion  is a sight to behold.  Once inside,  the halls of mirrors is the most popular with so much much more.  If you like the gardens,  you won't be disappointed!  Formal, informal and take it all in!  One day is not enough if you want to see the whole place .

It is worthwhile to take the earliest train from Paris to Versailles. You will want to start the day early, and plan to be there all day. Viewing the palace and the grounds will take a long time, and once you get there you won't want to leave. It is wise to grab a picnic lunch before leaving Paris so you can picnic in Marie Antoinette's gardens and save money. Be warry when buying you're tickets for the grounds and palace. I somehow ended up having to pay for each individual part of the palace, but I'm sure there is a universal ticket available. If you don't speak French, you should get an audioguide. Make sure to have a bottle of water and sunscreen, because there are no trees directly around the part of the building where you wait in line to buy your ticket. If you don't arrive early, the line moves very slow.
