This region is located in the south of France along its Mediterranean coast - it's main city, Montpellier, is situated about 730 km south of Paris.  The region is a very attractive to tourists because of its warm climate, its beautiful villages, its old stone buildings and churches, and its open colorful market with fresh fruits and vegetables.  Anchovies, cassoulet, cheese, fruits, char and wines are some of its food specialties.

If you like exploring medieval villages, the region of Gard is an ideal place. The most renowned town is Uzès, a prosperous town from the Middle-Age through the eighteen century. Visit the castle and the three towers. Go to the market (twice a week, Wednesday and Saturday).

Other paces to visit: Blauzac, Arpaillargues, Saint Siffret, Saint Maximin, Montaren.

Go to Grau-du-Roi (easy to locate on a map of Camargue region) and follow the direction for “Plage de l’Espiguette” ; in about 15 minutes you be on a unique, several mile long beach of light grey sand; it is natural and pristine, without trees or buildings, just dunes… is almost a lunar sight.

While in Camargue, take time to admire salt mountains and marais salants (salines), many wild birds-pink flamingos- wild black bulls and white horses. The village of Saintes-Maries de la Mer is worth visiting especially in May during the gypsies pilgrimage. Horseback-riding on the beach, with the sea on one side and small white houses on the other, is a superb experience.

A beautiful town easily combined with a trip to Pont-du-Gard. A lovely Chateau (Duche d'Uzes) with stunning views from the top of the tower (only for the fit or foolhardy!). A lovely town centre with many very solid buildings with solid shady stone arcades. The Cathedral (slighlty outside the centre) has an  unusual and beautiful  riound windowed tower, called the Fenestrelle.

Go walking in and around Uzes - there are some really nice small backroads connecting farms surrounding the town with lots of willows and cyprus trees offering pleasant shade.  If you go in August you might pass some fig trees that can be picked for their delicious fruit.
