Languedoc-Roussillon What to Expect

Famous for its roman remains. You cna buy a combined ticket which allows you to visit the amphitheatre (the gladiator exhibitors are great for kids), the maison carree (a well preserved temple with a 3D film show, again, good for kids) and the watch tower. It's also a vey pleasent place to wander round the old town. Beware, traffic and parking is tricky, best to use pne of the underground carparks, they are reasonable.

In Thuir there is a little hotel/restaurant that's worth paying a visit to. It is called Cortie and it's as old as Thuir (nearly...). 40 years ago when I was a kid my aunt alreday took me there to eat meatballs "à la catalane", rabbit and other local delicacies. It used to be a worker's restaurant with very little confort and bleak neon lights. It now has been transformed in a cosy little hotel and restaurant with a very nice buffet.

A beautiful town easily combined with a trip to Pont-du-Gard. A lovely Chateau (Duche d'Uzes) with stunning views from the top of the tower (only for the fit or foolhardy!). A lovely town centre with many very solid buildings with solid shady stone arcades. The Cathedral (slighlty outside the centre) has an unusual and beautiful riound windowed tower, called the Fenestrelle.

Go walking in and around Uzes - there are some really nice small backroads connecting farms surrounding the town with lots of willows and cyprus trees offering pleasant shade. If you go in August you might pass some fig trees that can be picked for their delicious fruit.
