Travel Tips from people who've been to Sainte-Mere-Eglise
The main church in St. Mere Eglise is not only a must see, it's just about impossible to miss. Maybe with your eyes closed. There is a dummy of an American Paratrooper that hangs from the steeple. True story - it was the first town liberated by the Allies in WWII and one of the paratroopers got stuck on the steeple. Remember the movie, "The Longest Day"? That wasn't Hollywood - that really happened! And one of the stained glass windows inside the church has paratroopers coming out of the sky! June 6th for them is like our July 4th. Good tip? (0) It was one of the places where allied paratroopers landed the night before D-day. On top of the church you see one puppet soldier hanging there representing the soldier who that night got stuck there with his parachute. As the Germans thought he was dead, they didn't shoot at him. There are shops with souvenirs from World War II. Good tip? (0) Recent Updates for Sainte-Mere-Eglise
