Travel Tips from people who've been to Arles
Hôtel Le Cloître in Arles is a former medieval convent, with many of its ancient walls still intact or gently renovated. Rooms are beautifully furnished and reasonably priced, and you really can't beat that charm. Also, it's very close to the ancient Roman theatre. Arles is a very convenient starting point to explore the surrounding region; there are several beautiful places within a short driving distance, such as Les-Baux-de-Provence and Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer.

If you visit Arles in September, you should try to visit the city when they are hosting a bullfight in the town's Roman Ampitheatre - the entire city is alive with people, street vendors, artisans, music etc.  (Note: I discovered that the Provencal-style "bullfighting" is not harmful. Instead, the men try to remove a tassle from the bull's horn without getting injured.)

In my opinion, the most attractive town in the area well worthy of a day.  If you can visit on market day (Saturday morning) the town is full of life and the market is huge. Very picturesque around the amphitheatre area, but make time to stroll around the whole town. There is a beautiful garden at the Asylum (another of Van Gogh's subjects).
