Marseille, with a population of over than 700 000 people, is located on the Mediterranean coast in the south of France.  Despite being 770 km from Paris, Marseille is accessible by TGV from Paris in just 3 hours. Dominated by the basilica «Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde», Marseille is the first harbor in France where people from the whole Mediterranean basin are gathered. Marseille, the antique Massilia, exhibits a mix of large avenues like the renowned Canebière and smaller, cumbersome, noisy and lively streets. Hometown of soccer player Zidane, it attracts soccer fans with its soccer club, l’Olympique de Marseille. The island with Château d'If (the setting of “the Count of Monte Christo” novel) is accessible by boat from the picturesque Vieux Port.

Travel Tips from people who've been to Marseille
Bring your scuba diving gear when visiting Marseille, Cassis, and any beach heading towards St. Tropez!  There are a plethora of beautiful beaches from the border of Spain all the way to Italy.
Drive the entire coastline of Southern France.  You will be very happy you drove here like the locals.  Shop and eat where the locals hang out, too.  Blend in by wearing no designer brands, no USA T-Shirts/tennis shoes, just wear nice, non-descriptive, casual clothes.
Carry a small video camera which also does double duty taking still shots.  Go hiking along the shoreline and absorb the breath-taking vistas.
Stay at hostels driving from Spain all the way to Italy.  Go visit these URLs:

I hope to see you somewhere around the planet!

While traveling around Europe, it is very wise just renting a wreck or buying an old van.  If you intend staying in Europe for at least two months, the cost renting a car or buying a van will outweigh the overall cost because you will be able to see more places.

Riding public transportation has its distinct disadvantages due to the fact you will not see places where locals shop, live, and hang out.  I rented a car for three months while traveling around Europe and I must say it was THE BEST JOY RIDE of my life!
