Travel Tips for History of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur

Digne, Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur, France
Digs! Should be Digne les Bains, but Digne works. Don't be fooled, there's no history in this town to visit, the roman ruins are long gone and it's very unpleasant on a rainy day

Avignon, Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur, France
A trip back in history for anybody interested in the middle ages - this is a medeival town! The people are friendly, and from the gardens at the palais des papes you get an amazing view...despite the climb on a hot day. The only down side, is that the sewerage system is totally inadequate during the tourist season, and the whole place stinks. This shouldn't bother medieval enthusiasts though ;)

Avignon, Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur, France
OK, I know France is considered the land of l'amour (love that is), but Avignon truly does have an incredible romantic feel about it. You don't need a significant other to enjoy it though. The great architecture, history and picturesque quality of the city are enough to warrant a visit. If nothing else, it's worth visiting the only seat of the Pope that ever existed outside of Rome itself; the Palais des Papes is a great back drop to any adventure.

Marseille, Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur, France
Marseilles has seen better days, but remains an important transport hub, connecting en Provence (and France) with international shipping, trains, and flights. Lots of nightlife, and Marseilles and the rest of this region is known for its excellent bouillabaisse (seafood soup) cooked slow for days, but the city itself can be a bit grotty... I would go further east to Cassis (only 15-minute drive) where this quaint fishing town has beautiful beaches, day trips, history, fresh food and smaller hotels. A perfect romantic getaway!
