Doesn't matter if you go east or west, you end up in a famous city. East of Villefranche lies Monaco (about 30 min. with the train), west of it lies Nice. Somewhere in between (I'm not sure, I've never been there) is Cannes.

003best place to stay is the hostel "villa saint exupery" in nice. they have a huge garden with bbq space, the hostel is driven by a family from the UK, very friendly stuff, and only 30 minutes away from villefranche
