Rhone-Alpes What to Expect
Lyon, Rhone-Alpes, France Lyon is a wonderful city to live in. If you go there for a visit go up to the Church at the top of Fourvière and admire a magnificient view (for those who don't feel like walking all the way a small train will take you to the top). After going down, walk around the little streets of the vieux Lyon and check out some of the shops and pubs. If you have children with you, I suggest going to the Tete d'Or parc and its zoo (free !), with its lions (if you're lucky they might even roar), giraffes, elephants, monkeys... Good tip? (0) Grenoble, Rhone-Alpes, France Well, this is my home town so of course I love it! ^_^
It is hot in summer and cold in winter and has 4 different seasons with different good points for each. I would recommend to go there in May or June as it is not yet as hot as in July or August but still with lots of sun. Visit the "bastille" on the top of the city but taking the "bulles" and coming down walking. It will take the afternoon but well worth it. you have views over the city and the journey down is being surrounded by trees and nature.
If you are not into nature, the centre of the town has loads of shops and old houses to have a look at. Find the house of Stendhal when he was a boy. It is in a small square with places for the kids to play and places to relax in the sun. While you should not walk on the grass, duinrg spring and summer, you can lie on it and sun bathe ^_^
Finally, the ski stations! Grenoble is the door to the mountains and you can go where you want and to whatever station you like: family, with the full range of sloughts or just 1/2 hour from Grenoble.
The university means that there are a lot of parties and a young atmosphere in the city.
Well worth a visit Good tip? (0) Vallon-Pont-d'Arc, Rhone-Alpes, France A beautifull village in the south of France (Ardèche). Near to a big natural monument, a real nice sight, "Le Pont d'Arc". It's a big rock hollowed out by the water and froms an arc over the river "Ardèche". In the city itself a hit for the children is the ancient merry go round. Good tip? (0) Lyon, Rhone-Alpes, France While trying to figure out the subway, watch out for children who try to help you. They want money and expect to be paid. Also, if you are riding the subway, do not be surprised if beggars get on and have their children go round collecting money from the riders on the subway. Its saddening yet annoying. Good tip? (0) Lyon, Rhone-Alpes, France Sadly, as most tourist pass through Lyon, on their way from/to Paris, this beautiful town does not get the credit it deserves... But maybe that is also part of its authenticity as it is not as crammed with tourists... The old town, the roman ruins, the huge Basilica perched atop the hill, the lively center, the intriguing "traboules" (tunnels through the blocks linking the old streets through superb medieval courtyards) are enough to spend a couple of days in the town. What's more, some districts like The slopes are full of nooks and crannies where you can discover some alternative places which are a lot of fun to hang out at (boardgame cafes, chicha places...) and to be remembered : Lyon is the capital of gastronomy. In my eyes, one of 5 stops that must not be missed in France... Paris is beautiful but it is not France, more like a tourist living museum. Lyon is much more representative of France. Good tip? (+2) Lyon, Rhone-Alpes, France Go to the old city up on the hill, visit the old cathedral, admire the buildings that still have wooden hooks under the rafters that were used in silkmaking back in the day, walk the cobblestones and admire the view of the city and river.
