Situated on the northern coast of South America, this French administered region is considered the largest region of the European Union outside of Europe. French Guiana is divided into two distinct sections – a coastal strip where the majority of people live and a densely covered rainforest that is considered one of the last great tropical rainforests. It is possible to tour these forests, but it’s best done with a guide. Within the forest, lie the Tumac-Humac Mountains, the tallest peaks in the region. Off the shore, the Devil’s Island is a small island that was once the site of a notorious French penal colony where inmates ranged from political prisoners to hardened murderers and thieves. Few who were sent there ever left, as it was extremely difficult to escape. Cayenne, the country’s capital named after the pepper, features attractions including Fort Cépérou, which offers views of the city, and its port. A number of local markets also make for interesting visits. By the coast, the Kaw swamps are an everglades like region packed with many creatures including caiman and colourful breeds of fish. For those who don’t require a well-developed tourist infrastructure, and want to see unspoiled jungle, French Guiana is an interesting destination.

Travel Tips from people who've been to French Guiana
Bourda is a little moutain near Cayenne in French Guyana. It's neither a long nor a difficult trip...but you know in French Guyana, it's really Hot and Wet weather...So when you climb up a little, it's difficult for you ! You can begin to walk on bourda's mount by the beach, Montabo Beach, so you can have a swim, in a really hot water, 30°C...and after at the beginning you can see differents birds (french name : AIgrette bleue, aigrette tricolore, aigrette neigeuse...) you can see some dolphins or lamatins (vachedilo in foreign language !) if you are lucky ! The first part is really hard, but you recognise a lot of differents trees typical of tropical forest, and a lot of typical spiders too ! in the second part ! You can also see some apes (GoldHander Tamarins, Saimiris...) in the top of trees..it's really nice and like every where in French Guyana, you can meet a lot of Butterflys ! The end of the walk is buy the Christ Walk, but it's realy dirty, and only the top view is special, you can see here all of the Bourda's beach on the other side until MontRavel Mountain ! It's really nice with this so marvellous blue sky and this incredible hot and shining sun !!! SO after you are really thirsty and you really need to go for a sleep in a Hamac for a long time, without forgotten a nice fresh coco drink....! Just have a rest and think about all of it, you enjoy it, it's just a touch of French Guyana ! See you ! Good tip? (0) The police station is quite difficult to find (to get your exit/entrance stamp) so try if possible, to have a map before you go, or know how to ask for and understand directions in French. We have terrible French, and while we were wandering around looking for it, a police car drove by so we got a ride with them. I am sure that isn't normal but they were very nice.
Anyways, one more thing, if you are going further into French Guiana from here, the mini bus drivers can charge whatever they want and they know it. They have quite a little monopoly going, so be prepared for the heart attack any budget traveller would feel.
I think that is it. It was quite a cute little town on the river, we continued on to Brazil there, Oiapoque to Macapa to Belem, and then upriver to Peru. Good tip? (0) Cayenne is a beautiful city, but very expensive. (A budget room is still 50 Euros a night!) Have Pho and Smoothies down at the market. If you are trying to get to Brazil, unless you speak French fluently, and maybe even still if you do, the colectif drivers know you have no other choice. you'd be lucky to pay less than 40 Euros a person for a 2 hour drive! Then there is an overnight bus to the nothing is happening town of Macapa, and a miserable ferry trip to Belem (miserable due to the tidal phenomenon.) Anyhow, work out the aproximate costs because it may work out cheaper or at least not much more to fly from Cayenne to Belem. Unless you need to draw that little we did it overland line, it is well worth looking into. Good tip? (0)
