A narrow country that partially bisects Senegal, The Gambia is dominated by its namesake river, which flows through the center of the country. Many visitors never explore the country beyond the beaches, which are popular with European package travelers. For those that do venture beyond, there is the capital city of Banjul with its Albert Market, and the nearby city of Serrekunda, – both good introductions to West African markets and life. Nearby are mangrove swamps that you can take boat trips through, and the Abuko Nature Reserve whisch is a small tropical river forest with many monkeys and birds. Further upriver, one can visit traditional villages that have been largely unaffected by tourism, or the Kiang West National Park, a wild area containing a wide range of mammals and birds. As well, there are the Wassu stone circles, which are stone pillars from one to three meters high arranged in circles around the ancient burial site. Not exactly Stonehenge in scope, but they are a good piece of African history.

Travel Tips from people who've been to Gambia
Avoid the "Ferry Guest House" in the city of Banjul, althogh it is in some older, obviously out-of-date version of the Lonely Planet travellers book, described as a low-budget, cozy and nice place... It is more like some mixture of a brothel and a junkie place where you can get planted some drugs and than the so-called policemen come busting in your room with no possibility to lock the door... At the daytime nobody is there, but at night the place gets filled with suspicious looking people... I only spend my first night there after arriving to the airport before going out to the country, so really I advise you to pick some other place to crash in when in need... Like in most places, ferry ports, railway stations and bus stations, sometimes outside airports, are usually a common place to people who like to hassle a lot...

When out and about you are certain to be approached by what are know locally as 'Bumsters'. They will give you a tale of woe ( my sister needs an operation - I am a school teacher need money for books - I need money for this or that, etc etc). The stories are not rue and just designed to get you to give them money. The best response is just to say no, very firmly, but do not get drawn into conversation with them -they are very insistant. You can help local people by visiting local schools and them a donation directly or take excercise or text books, pens pencils etc. Or, perhaps visit the hospital in Banjul (tours at 10.00am and 2.00pm) and make a donation to their funds.
