Germany is one of the leading countries in Europe and contains a wealth of historical treasures. Cosmopolitan Berlin is one of the world’s most cutting edge cities, attracting artists and immigrants and undergoing massive changes since the fall of the Wall. You can wander through the streets and amongst the buildings that have played such prominent roles in 20th century history, and cap your time off by visiting some of Berlin’s outstanding museums.
Munich is another highlight as Bavaria's capital and the home of Oktoberfest. It is also notable for its excellent Pinakothek galleries and the scientific Deutches Museum. Nearby are the German Alps and the world-class Neuschwanstein Castle. Other clusters of castles can be found scattered across the Rhine and Mosel Valleys.
The Romantic Road is covered with picturesque churches, villages and walled cities. Of these, Rothenburg is the most famous – a beautifully preserved (and heavily touristed) medieval town.
The former Eastern Germany is still mostly poor and struggling to recover from decades of Communism. Dresden is the highlight of this region (not including Berlin) with its outstanding Zwinger museum complex and rebuilt Frauenkirche.
