The accommodations a rather spartan and impeccable. The breakfast is good. The owner of this hotel also has part of the SS bunker system which you can visit for a nominal fee. (0)  071If you go to Berchtesgaden, you have to visit the Eagle's Nest, Hitler's favourite alpine accomodation. To arrive there you must take a lifter in the hearth of the mountain, an engineering masterpiece. Where to eat: Berchtesgaden Hofbrauhaus on the main street. Typical bavarian dishes. On the other side of the road a lovely place to stay at night: Landhaus Freund by Frau Anneliese Hanel (www.pension-hanel.de). Good tip? (0)  1850261If you are at all interested in WWII history, ferret out the spot where Hitler's home stood up on the mountainside. You can tour the bunkers, but the house was blown off its foundation by U.S. troops. Don't bother asking the locals for directions: they pretend that the place does not exist. Go figure!
