People in Bayern Region
Munich, Bayern Region, Germany
Munich is a beautiful city, especially if it's spring- or summertime. Then, of course, it's time to visit some of the numerous beer gardens of Munich. I can especially recommend the ones at the Wiener Platz in Haidhausen, which belongs to the Hofbräukeller and the Max-Emanuel beer garden in the Adalbertstreet, very close to the Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich. Both of them lie rather central and are easily accesible by public transport. Although they are located amidst of Munich, you will be able to experience a fantastic atmosphere there. They are like recreative oases in the jungle of a large city. Once you are inside the garden, you can enjoy your "Maß" of beer and every Bavarian delicacy you can imagine. Needless to say, that you can meet nice and friendly people there - not only from Bavaria - but also from all over the world to make friends with.

Dachau, Bayern Region, Germany
Dachau, like Auschwitz or Birkenau, is a sobering and saddening experience beyond compare ... Dachau, I think, was the first concentration camp ... conveniently close to Munchen ... it is smaller than many other camps built later but this is where it started ... as you enter its gates you are frozen with shock and the true import of the holocaust sinks into you ... the 'systematic' nature of the atrocities is what shocks most and Dachau is a prime example... how could humans possibly do this to each other while still being able to live and enjoy otherwise normal lives ... there is a wonderful essay by George Steiner that talks of a concert hall in Munchen where, at the time, people could be sitting and enjoying Mozart while, at the same time, screams of people being put on trains for Dachau could be heard there... something about human nature that can aspire to beauty and life in the thick of misery and death ... and there is Chomsky's argument too that human atrocity is inherent, nothing new in it by way of time or geography, almost every nation across history has inflicted the grossest barbarism on others ... and though the signs at the camp read 'never again' ... globally, things continue, with a variety of atrocities, not just physical or political but also economic and social ...

Munich is an awsome place to visit. Beer gardens all over the place.Usually a rock band playing and you just sit wherever there is room and meet other people. When you go to get your beer, you buy a tolken. With the tolken you get a beer in a branded glass. If you keep the glass, you forfeit your tolken, but the glass is worth keeping as a souvinier. Make sure you visit the Glockenspiel in the square and visit all around it. There is a really neat market south east of the square and at the west end of the square is a very long shopping street. The only bad thing is that you cannot find anything over a canadian size 10:(

Please be tactful when you visit. We were there with a group of Americans who were posing next to the gas chambers for photographs like it was the leaning tower of Pisa! Then as we were leaving they were like "Thank God WE rescued those people." Just like they didn't get anything out of it besides how amazing Americans are. Please don't be offended if you are American, I have many many many wonderful Americans and even have family who are American. It was just these people that were not giving you a very good name internationally. And you can't bike to it from Munich, take a train.

Probably the nicest overall city in Europe! Clean, friendly people, very cultured, good food, superb transit system, safe, excellent night life, good sports accomodations and many options to watch live sports games (Bayern München, 1860 München, the Munich ice hockey team, etc. Tips for those interested in culture: Deutsches Museum, Alte und Neue Pinakothek, Die Residenz, ... For those who enjoy the nightlife and like clubbing: go to Kultfabrik at München Ostbahnhof: plenty of clubs there, you name your favorite kind of music or nightclub, they have it!!! For those who like a stroll: knock yourselves out im Englischen Garten: enjoy the nature and make sure you don't get lost, for it's a huge park (probably one of the largest urban parks in Europe). Munich is, even more so than Berlin, a must see!!!

Another European great ... the highlight has to be those enormous mugs of weiss beer that would be called pitchers for 3 or 4 elsewhere but are a single shot here ... go to a traditional beer hall (there is one infamous one too that Hitler apparently frequented) and watch those healthy ladies balance dozens of these mugs frothing with beer to the brim, and bring them to you ... could never understand why you need Oktoberfest in a year-round beer-fest city like this ... of course there is much of Bavarian culture and history and life too to sample in Munchen ... and sausages of every make too if you like them, though I never took to them the way I took to cheese for instance ...

The City of Munich is really nice... A lot of friendly people, the BMW-Vehicle Museum and a great Music-Museum with a lot of Guitars from Angus Young to James Hettfield... And a Shirt from Jim Morrisson with his Sign on the Front... ;-) When you want to go to the Olympic Stadium, it`s a nice Hotel beside the Area...

Fussen, Bayern Region, Germany
Some of us like to travel to what I like to call the far side of nowhere. And no place in Germany (with the possible exclusion of Oberstoppel Unterstoppel) qualifies better for that denomination than Füssen. Some 40 miles from Füssen the highway ends. Literally. To your left there's a six lane highway, to your right is a field. With cows.
So why on earth go to Füssen ? History-sensitive people have one reson, musical actors have another. History-sensitive musical actors therefore have two reasons to go there. Füssen sports an ultra modern musical theatre, so musical actors tend to show up from time to time begging for work (what they usually and euphemistically call "auditioning"). The theatre is situated at the "even further side of nowhere". Enough said.
Fortunately the somewhat excentric king Louis II of Bavaria (not to be mistaken for the King Louie from "Jungle Book") chose this place to build two castles. Why the reference to "Jungle Book" ? Well, "JungleBook" refers to Disney and what is one of the most wellknown icons of Disney ? The Magic Kingdom Castle. And THAT is based upon the fairytale castle Louis II built in Füssen and called Neuschwanstein (New Swan Stone Castle). This place is either beautiful or kitschy. Depends on your taste. Whatever your taste one description fits both tastes : impractical. There are no two rooms on the same floor, some rooms have no doors nor windows, others are too small to get into, there's a cave on the fourth or fifth floor, the whole thing is some kind of weird tribute to beauty with complete disregard for practicality. And that makes it so enticing.
And that is why Füssen is worth a visit.
But stay away from the tourist traps at the foot of the hill.

Take the Mike's Bike tour - it's a great way to see the city. Also go to the Hofbahnhaus if only to see the women carry 10 enormous steins in each hand. If you plan to go to Austria after, the train trip from Munchen to Salzburg goes through some of the most beautiful countryside!

If you're going to München (Munich), you have to take the time to travel out to see King Ludwig II's beautiful Schloß Neuschwanstein (New Swan Stone Castle). You can look at all the lovely pictures you want, but none of them do the place justice. The experience is breathtaking to say the least.

On the other hand, if you're staying in the city and want a day of sightseeing I would definitely suggest Mike's Bike Tour . The guides are humorous, knowledgeable and rather helpful. Watch out for the intermission though; riding a bike after a comfortable little break at a nice German beer garden is a tricky ordeal.

Beautiful, great fun! Take Mike's Bike tour. Ends at Hofbraugh haus. Book a hotel/room before you go as there is a major hotel shortage. don't stay at the tent, nasty recirculated air.

Munich, the epitomy of a clean, tidy, organised German city. Beautiful, with majestic buildings, clean streets, No traffic, just bikes! Everybody can cheaply rent a municipal bike from a certain stand in the city and pedal his way to his/her destination. Than he/she just locks the bike for the next person who might need it. Perfect! And the Opera! It' s beauty- and the performances- brought tears to my eyes- literally. The best "Corsaire" I 've ever seen, the same goes for Bellini' s "Norma". Pure magic, heaven on earth, spiritual orgasm!
