Rostock was the middle of one of our most confusing A to B yet! We began in Berlin. This is what we were told we had reserved and was all included on our train pass (and were charged a reservation fee accordingly): Berlin-Rostock via train, Rostock-Malmo via ferry, Malmo-Copenhagen via bus. (yes we were silly to think the ferry and bus would also be included but when someone who works there is telling you to your face you believe it.) Anyways this is really the main Rostock tip right here: The ferry is not near the train station! We arrived in Rostock thinking the ferry would be right there and it wasn't. Luckily I think even the german-speakers thought the same as us, and a really nice lady negotiated a cab at the train's expense. Then once we got to the ferry there was no reservation and the guy working there was a slimeball. We kept saying no we can't afford a cabin and after about 10 minutes arguing with him we got a spot on the deck for E$20 (we snuck inside after the boat started cause it would have been to cold to spend the night out there.) Oh yeah, turned out cause ticket guy had such a chip on his shoulder he told us with our ticket we had to stay on the deck, but we found out that we were welcome to the comfy reclining seats once we got there. And then the bus also not included but the driver took pity on us and gave us a free ride. So there you go. Don't trust the ticket guy at the Rostock Ferry, and keep in mind that the ferry is driving, not walking distance from the train.

If you bring your children to Rostock and though it may be harsher, don't take a tourist bus. I remember my firsth trip there and yes, we went on a sightseeing trip with a bus. And boy, I can tell.. it was so booooring and after the ride we got about 30 minutes to just walk around before we had to get back to the bus. I got so much more experience from the walk around, than seeing all the buildings and stuff, behind some dirty buss window.
