Oh, here we go, my home town. Görlitz is a gorgeous town and definitely worth a visit! (and I'm not just saying that because I was born there) First of all, it's got a German and a Polish (called Zgorzelec) part separated by the river Neiße. It's got a beautiful old town built in the 15th/16th century with a fascinating history and lots of cosy restaurants and bars - try St Jonathan for food & Via Regia or Schwarze Kunst for drinks. Most of the town was built till the 1920s and you'll find some great examples of the art nuveau (in German: Jugendstil). Some sites that may interest you are: Church St Peter, Untermarkt, Obermarkt, Flüsterbogen, Kaisertrutz, Frauenkirche, Kaufhaus am Demianiplatz, Heiliges Grab.
Its location is perfect for day trips to Dresden (1hr drive), Prague (2hrs drive) or Berlin (2.5hrs drive) as well as to discover the variety of nature at the lake Berzdorf (a now cultivated and flooded former site for brown coal mining) and the Zittauer Gebirge (mountains perfect for walks, hiking and cycling in summer and skiing in winter). Its local brewery is called Landskron - in case you thought it's too small to brew its own beer.
I really hope you'll find this info helpful, because it's definitely worth a visit!!! At least it's proven to become a popular film site: parts of "Around the world in 80 days" were filmed there (when the hot air balloon flies over Paris while Jackie Chan is hanging on the rope) as well as parts of "The reader" with Kate Winslet.
