Wedel, Schleswig-Holstein Region, Germany
Although not a part of the city of Hamburg Wedel is a de facto suburb of the city.
Wedel has a Subway station connecting it to Hamburg's rapid transit system.
The thing Wedel is most known for is the "Willkomm Höft". As ships pass Wedel on the river Elbe on their way in and out of the port of Hamburg each ship is greeted over a big loudspeaker system and the national anthem of the ships home land is played. It's worth visiting and I know of no other institution like this.
The high speed ferry connecting Hamburg and the island of Helgoland stops in Wedel just at the Willkomm Höft.
The Willkomm höft is also a good starting point for a walk or bicycle ride along the river into Hamburg. You will pass the pompus suburb of Blankenese, have a chance to look across the river and see the airbus factory and probalby meet loads of people if the weather is nice. Musicians and vendors selling Crepes or ice cream are around as well. The ways are mostly for pedestrians and bicycles only.
As the subway line S1 runs roughly along the river as well there is always the option of takeing the train back to the place you stay at should your feet get tired.

Wacken, Schleswig-Holstein Region, Germany
Wacken, during the year a small quiet town about 75 kilometers (50 miles) north of Hamburg with about 2000 habitants. But for the first week in august the population increases to 75'000 people because of the biggest Heavy Metal Festival worldwide. You can take the train from Hamburg to Itzehoe and take the shuttlebus to Wacken. If you travel by Car on the Motorway use the exit Schenefeld, Wacken. It has 2 Supermarkets, Petrolstations, Pharmacy and 2 Banks with ATM. The people of Wacken are the friendliest you can find and are always looking forward to meet new visitors. At the festival there is a huge campsite but you can also bring your motorhome. So if you like Heavy Metal, this is the place to be in August.

Puttgarden, Schleswig-Holstein Region, Germany
Probably a blur for most people, rushing onto the ferry from Germany to Denmark. But it is on the most logical route to Scandinavia, so very difficult to miss.

Schleswig-Holstein Region Arts & Recreation
Molln, Schleswig-Holstein Region, Germany
Molln is a nice, small town 50 km east of Hamburg, Germany. There are a number of lakes that surround Molln and if the weather is nice (on a good day in the summer), it is great to hire a canoe and peddle around on the waters. After the workout, make sure you have a nice drink in the bar next to the church in the town centre. If you are lucky, they are playing live jazz music there.

Helgoland, Schleswig-Holstein Region, Germany
Helgoland isn't all that big, so if you like ferries and you're in northern Germany, you may want to take a day trip there. There's a huge duty-free industry, since the island is technically in international waters. The British bombed the island so extensively in WWII that the face of the island was permanently altered. Bring boots for hiking some steep climbs.

Some nice old houses here, very authentic and very non-touristic looking. Also a good place to fish for perch.

Berlin, Schleswig-Holstein Region, Germany
Take a free tour of the city (either walking or biking). Tours meet near the Brandenburg Gate around 11am and are a great way to get to know the city and find your bearings. I did mine with the guys in the red shirts (cant recall the company name!!) and it was great - one of the best tours I did the whole time I was travelling.

If you have kids, visit the extensive play area of wood constructed activities in Erlebniswald. If you are lucky, you might see a wild boar in the surrounding forests.

Flensburg, Schleswig-Holstein Region, Germany
A picturesque town which combines great shopping with a large and interesting harbour area. Go to the quayside to nwatch the jellyfish in the summer, I have never seen more anywhere. The red light district happens to be in one of the most historic streets so you have an excuse for a wander.

Lubeck, Schleswig-Holstein Region, Germany
This is a city associated with the author Thomas Mann - visit his and his brother's place called Buddenbrooks here, now a sort of museum, where you see manuscripts and other paraphernalia linked to him...and perhaps pick up a bottle or so of local wine too...otherwise a lovely little city too with the typical charm of small northern German cities like Bremen...stroll around on its streets admiring the surrounds and taking in the clean crisp air...
