Also known as Glorieuses, the two lush coral islands -- Ile Glorieuse and Ile du Lys are located near Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. They are small in size – 5km2, and now serve primarily as a nature reserve and nesting ground for birds and sea turtles. It was first settled in 1880 by a Frenchman wanting to set up a coconut and maize plantation. Glorieuses are presently occupied by a French military garrison who also run a weather and radio station.
