Travel Tips from people who've been to Central Greece
Volos combines sea and mountain (Pelion).
It is a small city (includint the ouskirts)
of appromaxitely 80.000 citizens.
Therefore it is to walk to your destination.
Although there is no traffic and the bus
tickets are really low-priced.
By car someone can easily access great
and clean beaches, which front the Aegean.
In Pelion are located lots of traditional
villages.
There is a wide street in Volos, where no cars are
allowed. There are only cafetterias for all favours
and enough space for pedestrians and for small
children to walk and play. This street faces only
the sea.
In Pelion, are also paths through the forest
for people who are in favour of nature!!!

Chalkis (or Chalkida mostly known nowadays in Greece) is a little town of almost 60.000 people. Accessible by car (just 81 km away from Athens) and train, it attracts many Athenians for one or two day trips. Most of them go there for a quiet evening and to drink 'Ouzo', accompanied with local fish. Although it lucks nightlife, it is a common destination for those who enjoy (or want to try) extreme sports. On the big bridge (Chalkis has two bridges), one can find the eldest nd most popular point for bunjee jumping in Greece. Finally, the town is a little industrialised (only two or three industries in the surrounding area) and the rest of the island is almost empty of industrial activity. So, the whole island (Euboea -or Evia in Greek-) is a wonderful landscape, with clean air, green mountains and many beaches.

Many Greeks stop in this place which used to be a resort, but is now for old people mainly, to savour 'loukoumades'. Having said this, I was once poisoned by the loukoumades eaten here and have never tried these sweet, honey-combed dumplings since. The place is ok, by the sea, and has a few ok eateries for more substantial food as well. A good first break out of Athens as you drive north to stretch your legs, but nothing more. The translation of the name of the place is English is 'burnt dry weed' but also (if you are imaginativ) 'burnt moron'...a family joke, as the word 'vourlo' is a 'moron' in Greek slang.
