Larisa is a city (including surrounding villages) of about 100,000 people. It is regarded in Greece for its conservatism because of its locale for large military bases. Also, as the heart of  Thessalian agricultura, standing amidst the country's largest agricultural plane. Surrounded by mountains it is hotter in summer and colder in winter than its surrounding mountain areas. In the last decade Larisa has changed from a dreary backwater into into a beautiful city. It is definitely off the beaten track. As an agricultural hub, its downtown is busy day and night, with a large central square (ringed with banks and other business) and many other smaller squares, all of which are also lined with cafes and bistros. Since the entry of Greece into the Commmon Market, it has become nearly impossible to distinguish young Greeks from young people anywhere in Europe or The states. Most interestingly, in the last few years,a major archeological discovery was made which is putting Larisa on the map (at least in the future). The City decided to deal with the local traffic nightmare by digging a massive underground parking lot beneath a major square (and traffic hub). Upon excavating, ruins of an ancient theater was discovered. Restoration was begun, and as it continues the extent of the ruin
puts this theater and it environs in the category of a major find. It continues to expand, necessitating the razing of an entire neighborhood. at the same time, what is left of that quaintly antiquated area of town has become the first bohemian neighborhood. The Larisai-ins are turning it into a charming collection of bistros-i, cafe, and boutiques, and avoiding (at least so far) lines of vapid apartment buildings.
Tirnavos, a nearby village is known for its local wine.
Landlocked, Larisa offers monstrouly hot summers. To reach the coast, locals drive 45-60 minutes to such beaches as Agiocampos, Stomion, Kokkino Nero, and the farther and more well known, Platamona. All of these towns are now built up, far different from the untouched  and quiet hideaways of the 60's. The entire coast is a corredor of small resorts, complete with noise, liiter, traffic, and rising prices.

Travel Tips from people who've been to Larisa
e ovo mjesto mi je ostalo zapamceno po tome sto sam s jedne strane gledao divlje egejsko more kako bjesni valovima od 3 metra, a s druge strane vrh Olimpa obavijem uzarenim oblacima iz kojih izviru zrake i uopce se nisam zacudio svoj mitologiji koju su grci isprepleli oko te planine. fakat malo treba da pomislis da gore Zeus i Hefesto igraju belu...
