Crete Island Dos and Don'ts
Travel Tips for Dos and Donts in Crete IslandFrangokastellon, Crete Island, Greece In the Sfakia aerea there is Frangocastello with its impressive fortress and enchanting beaches. The fortress was built by the Venetians in 1371, in a lonely spot, with no settlement around it, and was intended to protect this part of the southern coast from raids and to put down the uprisings of the local population. The people of Sfakia called it Frangocastello, that is "fortress of the Franks". It is rectangular in shape, with strong walls and a square tower in each corner. It is similar in construction to the lerapetra fortress. Good tip? (0) Milatos, Crete Island, Greece Milatos is divided into 2 villages caled: Milatos and Milatos Beach. The first one is a typical greek village located on the hills 1 km from the sea-shore and separated from it with an olive plantation. Recently it became renovated and has 2 or 3 restaurants but i remember the times when usually there was no sales-person in the local shop and customers were able to take whatever they wanted and pay to for it just by leaving money on the desk. It shows how much the inhabitants of Milatos trusted tourists. The second one is, as the name suggests, located by the sea although there is no real beach area except some sand near the harbour. There are 2 supermarkets and plenty of taverns/seafood bars. To sum up, it's a great place if you want to try fresh seafood and run away from loud, touristic resorts. Good tip?
