Travel Tips from people who've been to Rethymnon
Rethymnon is a very beautiful town. I went there by a local bus from Iraklion - the public transport in Crete is very convenient (comfortable buses with conditioners). Of course it is a little bit scary to be in a bus that is going through all the serpantines at high speed, but I believe the drivers are quite experienced :)
In Rethymnon it is amazing to take a walk in the older part of town and to explore all the narrow streets. Also there is a nice park near to the bus station if it's very hot and you want to find a shadow to hide from the heat.
The food is good there, especially the goods of the sea. Good tip? (0) If you have decided to stay here, you should know that there is a long underwater cliff, long probably as the beach is. So there is no way to the water if there are waves, which is almost always the case. Prepare to rent a car and go to the sought of the island. There are some beaches you can just imagine :) Good tip? (0) Take a trip to Hania and walk Samaria Gorge - it's the longest gorge in Europe! And look out for the fish and cross symbols near the end - according to Greek mythology, the Titans created the gorge by slashing the hillside with a sword, and placed the fish and the cross near the end to keep out evil spirits... Good tip? (0)
