It is usual to get there from Rhodes Island. If you want to see this beautiful place, take a trip by yourself. Travel agencies take a lot of money for that (40-50euros). You just have to get to the Rhodes (town) If you have a car, thing is easy. If not, catch a bus. In your hotel you can ask about the timetables. You have to be in Rhodes in the morning - tickets for ferries are limited:) I used ANES company (website: http://www.anes.gr/ferries_book_online.php ). Buy two ways ticket. You'll pay from 14 to 26 euros, depends on type of ferry you'll take. And have a nice trip! On Symi take a walk through narrow streets. Buildings are old and beautifully painted. Take a camera and well-loaded batteries - you'll make tones of pretty pictures. You can buy the cheap natural sponges. They are nice for great souvenirs! Quite cheap are also spices. Few good restaurants will make your trip very pleasurable:) But don't forget about going home!:) Have fun!
