Travel Tips from people who've been to Thessaloniki
Thessaloniki is a great city to visit. It's very rich in culture history and tradition. Food is exceptional and fairly cheap in comparison to other European cities. Every restaurant accepts credit card and the waiters are always friendly to the Americans. Hotel accomodations are great as well. A three start hotel is equal to our Marriott. Rooms are very spacious and very clean. Thessaloniki has numerous historical sites that are located throughout the city. The old city wall circle the entire city. If you like to walk, that the best way to spend your day. Just bring a pair of comfortable shoes and go explore. Their are over a dozen of beautiful churches and monastaries that can give you an idea how the city operated during Byzantine Time. Also make sure to visit the Old Watch Tower. Transportation is great, taxi is cheap and buses run all the time; however, walking is my recomendation that way you can connect with people and culture. Good tip? (0) Twice visited and both times it was amazing! Compared with the Acropolis it may not have so big attractions, but it still have some to discover. It's a very relax city, with nice spots to see and a really good vibe. Stroll along the seaside where the White Tower is and watch families do the same on a Sunday morning :) When you're there don't forget to try to Greek food - it will be a crime to go for fast-food or similar stuff instead! They have a tradicional desert, which translates as "triangules" and you should try it - it's very sweet, so it might be hangy to get a bottle of water to help ;) About going out, you must try the "taverna" and the "bouzoukia" - if you don't know what they are, ask any young local! Good tip? (0) If you want to have the most for your money, start at the museum in downtown, then take a long walk up to the citadel, through narrow streets and lovely scenery, along the old town walls. Lots of great sights on the way! Have dinner in one of the small tavernas around the citadel and enjoy the beautiful panorama overlooking the harbour.
If you want to immerse in nightlife, head towards the harbour - great pubs/taverns with long opening hours, delicious gyros and fine wines! Some clubs for dancing around the harbour area, too! Good tip? (0)
