Rodos, Cyclades & Dodecanese, Greece
We stayed in Ialyssos a small town next to Rhodos. The hotel was a 4*, but in reality only 3* and the food only 2*. Who is complaining? First day we rented a car and made a quick tour of the island. They have some castles in ruins and of course the acropolis which is impressive. The villages are beautiful and the food in taverns good. It was an entire day drive to see the entire coast. Not more then 250 km but with a lot of places to stop. They have a small city for partying. It was interesting to see the perspective that the Greeks have on tourists. For most tourists the people from any shop take out a bottle of ouzo and start smiling. The next 2 days I was only lying in the sun, watching the windsurfers. I think I will try that sport too sometime. The rest of the group who where travel agents in info-trip had an infernal hotels visitation while I was sitting next to the pool with Louis Armstrong’s “Sittin` in the sun” in my mind. Then there were 3 days of organized trips. First was by boat to Lindos, a city on the coast. A city starting with a on the top of the hill and ending through many narrow streets, filled with souvenirs shops and taverns, in the sea. Hot days. Almost 37-38 Celsius. Second was in Butterfly Valley where in the summer thousands of butterflies gather. Very beautiful view. And all the churches are small and decent, like real praying places. The last was in the city of Rhodos We had a good guide, a very funny old man. The old town is a regular castle built by the Saint John Knights. It is quite a view. The poor people from Rhodos still live in one half of the castle in houses that are 300 years old or more. In the last day we rented a car again and went directly south. At the lowest point of the island there is a beach that in the evening is covered by the waters of both Mediterranean Sea and Aegean Sea. In the day is full of people that practice windsurfing and parasailing. The view of one sea meeting another with two different colors of water it is spectacular.

I got stuck here after missing a ferry connection. It is a port city with not a lot to do. The people were very friendly, and though not many spoke English, they were very helpful.

Ancient Greece have a very special place in my heart and you can feel the history when you visit Acropolis!! Unfortunately you can't get really close to the temples...but when it is to preserve the temples it is worth it! History is very important but remember to walk down to the plaka area were you can get the feeling of the greek culture as it is now...There are shops, restaurants and of course tourist but it is all good!

Patrai, Western Greece, Ionian Islands & Peloponnese, Greece
The train from here (if you caught the ferry from Italy you likely ended up in Patras) to Athens is probably one of the worst train journeys I have been on, incredibly crowded, read: culture shock, very very hot, and takes at least double the time it should. If you are in Patras, you can easily make your way to Olympia connecting in Pyrgos. Well worth the visit- it is a beautiful place!

Athens, Athens & Attica, Greece
Athens (pronounced /ˈæθn̩z/; Αθήνα, Athina [aˈθina]), the capital and largest city in Greece, dominates the Attica periphery: as one of the world's oldest cities, its recorded history spans at least 3,000 years.

The Greek capital has a population of 745,514 (in 2001) within its administrative limits and a land area of 39 km² (15 sq mi). The urban area of Athens extends beyond the administrative city limits with a population of 3.37 million (in 2005). The metro area of Athens spans 412 km² (159 sq mi) and encompasses a population of 3.192.606. The Athens Larger Urban Zone (LUZ) is the 8th most populated LUZ in the European Union with an estimated population of 3.89 million (in 2001).
A bustling and cosmopolitan metropolis, Athens is central to economic,
financial, industrial, political and cultural life in Greece. It is
rapidly becoming a leading business centre in the European Union.

Classical Athens was a powerful city-state. A center for the arts, learning and philosophy, home of Plato's Akademia and Aristotle's Lyceum, Athens was also the birthplace of Socrates, Pericles, Sophocles, and its many other prominent philosophers, writers and politicians of the ancient world. It is widely referred to as the cradle of European civilisation and the birthplace of democracy,
largely due to the impact of its cultural and political achievements
during the 5th and 4th centuries BC on the rest of the then known
European continent.

The heritage of the classical era is still evident in the city,
represented by a number of ancient monuments and works of art, the most
famous of all the Parthenon on the Acropolis, widely considered an important landmark of early Western civilization. The city also retains a vast variety of Roman and Byzantine
monuments, as well as a small number of remaining Ottoman monuments
projecting the city's long history across the centuries. Landmarks of
the modern era are also present, dating back to 1830 (the establishment
of the independent Greek state), and taking in the Greek Parliament (19th century) and the Athens Trilogy (Library, University, and Academy).

Athens was the host city of the first modern-day Olympic Games in 1896, and 108 years later it welcomed home the 2004 Summer Olympics, with great success.

There is a great museum there where you can see King Midas' gold ring. There is alot of artifacts to see there. Don't get caught taking pictures or you will get scolded like I did. In the old town there are shops everywhere. You will find trinkets, bottle openers, lighters and lots of other items with peinises as the theme. this must be special to this island because I didn't see it at most other islands. And guess what, they come in small, medium, large and x-large Haha. Perhaps it has something to do with a God or something they used to worship, maybe still do:)

Athens, Athens & Attica, Greece
Athens was a real treat. We were there when the plaka was being torn up to make it better for the Olympics. The shop owners were ready to deal for sales of gold jewellery. Just be careful when asking for a good place to eat. you may end up at someones brother's place paying an arm and a leg for fish you didn't order:) Aside from that and even that was just an adventure, Athens has so much to offer. It's true that the Parthenon grounds are slippery. There are cats everywhere and some are friendly. Don't be alarmed, they are very skinny.

Food in Greece
Athens, Athens & Attica, Greece
If you head to Athens in the top of their summer, the city is a lot less crowded with large amounts on Atheneans leaving the city to spend time in the country.

The parthenon is VERY slippery as the stones have been polished by the feet of millions of visitors over the centuries.

The train system is incredible and goes all the way out to the airport. It is worth waiting for a train when you first get in as it will take you right into the city (or even to the plaka). Don't get caught out by the taxi drivers who are know to charge up to 200 Euro depending on how lost you look.

On the beach as you get to the shops you will find Pedro, the pelican. He is real and he is alive. If you bother him too much he will attempt to peck at you. The men sit at sunset on blue benches and talk amongst themselves as tourists litter by. there are lots of cats if you like them and lots of tourists.
