Situated in the heart of Mayan Central America, Guatemala though in recovery after years of internal conflict, is still subject to isolated cases of violent crime.  Nonetheless, it is fascinating country worth seeing with its colonial cities, including La Antigua Guatemala – once the third most important location in the Spanish Colony of the Americas, and Chichicastenango, known for its 400 year old church of Santo Tomas, still used by Shamans for their sacred rituals today.  Going further back in time, Guatemala was home to many significant Mayan sites, including Tikal a major religious, scientific and political centre.  The enormous complex of over 3000 structures is surrounded by dense jungle, and is altogether a powerful and compelling site to behold.  Even today, Mayan influences are everywhere, from  colourful Mayan dress to various Mayan languages that are still spoken in the highlands.  For more natural wonders, the beautiful Lake Atitlan region contains three volcanoes, including the Volcán de Agua (the Volcano of Water), San Pedro, Toliman and Atitlan.  Guatemala is a country full of rich experiences and archaeological splendors.

Is it safe for 2 girls to backpack around Guatemala?
I am planning a trip to Guatemala, Belize and Costa Rica next October. I know Belize borders Guatemala and the flights from Guatemala City to Belize are pretty expensive. Does anyone have any advice as to the best way to get there? We were thinking about renting a car and driving there, but how safe and easy would that be?

Travel Tips from people who've been to Guatemala

If you stay in Antigua, stay at the Black Cat Inn (www.blackcathostels.net). It's a beautiful hotel with a terrasse on the roof. They have private and dorms.
They have too an hostel in Quetzaltenango (Xela).

You should have solid Spanish language skills to get around in the city. Hire taxis from well-known companies and stick to Zona 10 as much as possible. Day trips to other areas can be safe if you stay alert and keep a low profile.
