A little known country to the south of Senegal, Guinea-Bissau was the last country to gain independence from colonization after its war of liberation with Portugal in 1974. Most of the country is quite lush and green, and the people are known for being friendly and laid back. Traditional sights are few in number and getting around can be difficult, but the scenery and culture may be quite worthwhile. See the quiet and lush islands of Bubaque and Bolama, and wander amongst the coconut trees and beaches. Watch the labourers and fishermen go about their daily business. Cashews are a major product, so there are many opportunities to see cashew factories and cashew trees. On the mainland, you can visit the crafts markets in the capital of Bissau and see the Pidjiguiti Memorial to the fifty dockworkers killed by police in 1959. The more adventurous can explore the little visited islands and interior of Guinea-Bissau.

Remember the hottest season in the Middle East is June - August. Temperatures ranging from 42 to 48 degrees celsius.  No one will be able to stand the heat. Why even the tarmac melts.  Locals tend to stay indoors.  Good for an instant sun tan yes. But you are also in danger or getting a heat stroke.  Advantage - cheaper hotel rates and tourist is at it's lowest in the year.

Gabu is a muddy, dirty, crossroads town in Guinea-Bissau.  However, it has beautiful Portuguese colonial architecture and city layout.  It helps to speak some Portuguese, if you don't speak the local language.  The people are inviting, nice, beautiful, and generous.

On your way out of Guinea Bissau, you will stop at Ingore to get your name put in the book. There may be a monkey around to greet you as well. Otherwise, typical small African village in the middle of nowhere.
