Guyana Travel Guide

Situated in the north-eastern portion of South America and strongly influenced by the Caribbean, Guyana is one of four non-Hispanic nations in the continent and the only English speaking one. In recovery from political troubles and ethnic tensions, Guyana is on its way to reposition itself is a premier eco-tourism destination. This densely forested country is home to a number of spectacular waterfalls, including Kaieteur Falls, an impressive 226 metre single drop waterfall that plunges down a curved sandstone wall, as well as Orinduik Falls, an ideal swimming waterfall situated in the Pakaraima Mountains. Nature lovers can visit the Iwokrama Rainforest reserve and the Canopy Walkway, a rainforest teeming with distinctive tropical plants as well as birds like the Green Aracari, Scarlet Macaw, and the Channel-bill Toucan. Beachcombers should visit Shell beach, which extends 90 miles along the northern shore. As the name implies, the beach is filled with countless tiny shells. It is a favourite nesting site for sea turtles and four of the eight species come ashore to nest. Heading back into the urbanized world, see Georgetown, the country’s capital within which lies St. George’s Anglican Church – the second tallest wooden church - one of the tallest wooden structures in the world - and numerous colonial buildings. Or go to see Demarara Harbour Bridge – the fourth longest floating bridge in the world - that connects Georgetown to Schoon Ord, West Bank Demerara. Consider Guyana for unspoiled nature and adventurous exploration.

If you ever get to travel to Guyana, you HAVE to see Kaieteur Falls. It's the worlds highest single drop waterfall, right in the middle of the Amazon. You can take a 4 day overland trip to get there from Georgetown,..

Travel Tips for Guyana

Lethem, Southern Guyana, Guyana
If crossing from Brazil, once you get up the dirt hill you turn right and walk to the Police station where you get your passport stamped. There they can direct you to where to catch a bus. It is a very friendly town.

We took a queue from the locals and stayed in at night. Our guesthouse advertized a beer garden and that ment they handed you a beer through bars- like not a bar bar but security jail type bars- didn't trust anybody. Oasis Cafe had AMAZING smoothies! And there is a really really nice man at the markets who has a stand that sells bread. The bread is very good. Only pay for a bus to the ferry- pay for the ferry separate and then pay for the bus to Paramaribo separate. Don't let them tell you any different when you buy your ticket. They pick up at your hotel at like 4am. oh and don't get confused- the bus drives onto a ferry on the way to the real ferry.

Dangerous as hell and a dump, unless you have a reason to come here, stay away. If you do come, then you can roam around (in a taxi, not alone) the botanical gardens, a couple of bizarre monuments, and get your taxi driver to come with you to Starbrook market and show you the breweries. there is a long bridge a bit before town as you come from the airport, plus some weird advertisements which make good pics. However, avoid!

The people in Guyana are lovely but stay alert on the local buses for pickpockets. I also got chased by a man with a bat because I'm white and had to run to a local police officer to escort me to a bus. That is not the general atmosphere but it can happen. The clubs were great! A mixture of disco, reggae, calypso and ballroom dancing. Get a bottle of local rum and some coconut water and dance the night away :) There was no running water where I stayed but there is running water in other places. Hang out with locals in the country if you can...I learned how to make tamarind balls while monkeys ran through the house!

Hosororo, Northwestern Guyana, Guyana
The Hosororo waterfalls is a rather beautiful bathing spot, go up the hill and then follow a path off to the left. Howling monkeys like to bathe there too. For one of the most beautiful things you will ever see, wake up at sunrise and see the view from the top of Hosororo hill.
