Travel Tips for Dos and Don’ts in Guyana

Georgetown, Georgetown & Surrounding Region, Guyana
We took a queue from the locals and stayed in at night. Our guesthouse advertized a beer garden and that ment they handed you a beer through bars- like not a bar bar but security jail type bars- didn't trust anybody. Oasis Cafe had AMAZING smoothies! And there is a really really nice man at the markets who has a stand that sells bread. The bread is very good. Only pay for a bus to the ferry- pay for the ferry separate and then pay for the bus to Paramaribo separate. Don't let them tell you any different when you buy your ticket. They pick up at your hotel at like 4am. oh and don't get confused- the bus drives onto a ferry on the way to the real ferry.

The people in Guyana are lovely but stay alert on the local buses for pickpockets. I also got chased by a man with a bat because I'm white and had to run to a local police officer to escort me to a bus. That is not the general atmosphere but it can happen. The clubs were great! A mixture of disco, reggae, calypso and ballroom dancing. Get a bottle of local rum and some coconut water and dance the night away :) There was no running water where I stayed but there is running water in other places. Hang out with locals in the country if you can...I learned how to make tamarind balls while monkeys ran through the house!

Hosororo, Northwestern Guyana, Guyana
The Hosororo waterfalls is a rather beautiful bathing spot, go up the hill and then follow a path off to the left. Howling monkeys like to bathe there too.

For one of the most beautiful things you will ever see, wake up at sunrise and see the view from the top of Hosororo hill.
