Travel Tips from people who've been to Hilo
When you arrive at Hilo Airport just should consider to leave the city and drive to the south/ south west of the isle of hawaii. there you find peace and the typical hawaiian life style; the "real" hawaii doens`t consist of shopping malls and tourist activities :-)
Futhermore you should really visit the Volcanoe Park, Green Sand Beach,... Bring along some good shoes, enough to drink (very important), bug spray, a rain jacket and some warm clothes for the cold evenings. Good tip? (0) If you are in Hilo, you need to visit Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park. You will never experience anything like it. To walk over crusted lava and look at cracks and seeing lava flow beneath your feet is a rush like none other. While walking from the car to the lava field we were in a torrential downpour and were soaked. By the time we left the lava field, we were completely dry. Seeing lava hit the ocean is a trip! It is free, as I recall. Starkly beautiful. Good tip? (0) The Safari helicoptor tours were an amazing way to get close to the volcanic sites on the big island. They also provide an incomparable view of the effects of a normal erruption from a distance. To see the cooled lava that flowed through the modern subdivision south of town is nothing less than inspiring when showing the power of these volcanic beasts. Good tip? (0)
