Honduras

This Central American country is off the main tourist circuits, meaning that you, as a tourist, can benefit from great exchange rates and good value experiences! Honduras borders both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean and most of the territory is mountainous with large stretches of undeveloped lowland jungle. The Río Plátano Biosphere Reserve – considered the last lungs of Central America has been appointed a world heritage site. High up in the mountains, the condensation of the persistent clouds have the led to the formation of the “Weeping Woods.” Oldgrove mangrove swamps and lagoons are teaming with life, and make for interesting snorkeling and scuba diving. Honduras was also the site of many Mayan settlements.  The city of Copán is one example of well preserved ruins with varying temples, intricate carvings, tombs and more. Here, there is an abundant amount of high relief style stone sculptures, as well as the only sites with the remains of a Mayan queen. Honduras was once a major banana producer.  On the Caribbean coast, towns such as Puerto Cortes, Tela and Trujilo show remnants of this activity. Come to Honduras for rich adventures and affordable prices!

This place is gorgeous. You may have to pay a small fee to go there, but it is well worth it. Lunch is typically included in the fee. They also prohibit vendors from going there so you can relax on the beach without..

I have been many times in La Ceiba. The weather is really cool for a tropical country. Near to La Ceiba we have one of the beautiful beaches of Honduras, Tela. Once you get there just enjoy the fresh air of the sea,..

Okay, the town has the same name as a former Dominican dictator, but it is certainly worth a visit. Be it only for the funniest museum I have ever seen. From Maya relics to office equipment from the banana-company and anything inbetween. Take your time, adapt to the leisurely pace and enjoy this qaint little village.

Welcome to the diving capital of the world. If you're going to Utila, chances are you're looking to dive. Just about everyone on the island is either on a diving vacation or just learning, as I was. If that's the case, I would highly recommend the Utila Dive Center. I got my certification there in the summer of 2006. It's a party atmosphere, but not at the expense of safety. Everybody there knows that diving is serious fun. The instructors go out of their way to ensure the safety of their divers, and will not hesitate to tell you if they seriously think you are not ready for diving. (That doesn't mean they're rude; it means they're concerned for your safety.) With that, though, everyone there is out for a good time and there is music playing constantly out on the pier. If you dive with them, you'll probably want to stay at the Mango Inn, which is included with their certification courses. I was backpacking when I visited and Mango was a rare bit of luxury after spending months in dingy hostels. There's an outdoor pool on the grounds and it's open all night. There's also a bar and restaurant. It's not a five star resort, but unless you're looking for decoration, tv, and carpeted hallways, it might as well be.

If you're going there and do not dive, be prepared. You better take a book or two and forget about getting any conversation. Anybody there is there to dive or to talk about diving. Apart from that, nice little island.

Honestly? A dump. The airport is quite pleasant but the rest of town is pretty grotty. There are a lot of beautiful places in Honduras, but the capital isn't one of them. Avoid if you can.

One of the best dive spots in the Caribbean, and cheap (10 dives US$20 a dive typically). Catch the ferry from La Cieba, get a taxi to West End. There are tons of funky little bars and restaurants, and a lot of dive schools, which encourages competition. I used Coconut Tree Divers, and I can't recommend them highly enough. Oh, and because Roatan was settled by slaves dumped by the British, everyone speaks English not Spanish. Only downside I could find was that the beach has a lot of sandflies.
