The Hong Kong dollar has been pegged to the United States dollar at the rate of US$1 = HK$7.80 since the mid-1980s, but the market rates can vary daily from the above rate. Money can be brought into and taken out of Hong Kong with no restrictions, and can be exchanged for the local currencies at banks, money changers, hotels and some large retail stores; all of them generally charge a commission for the exchange. Do check and compare exchange rates and commissions before any transaction.
Hong Kong dollar notes issued are in denominations of $10, $20, $50, $100, $500 and $1,000, whereas coins are issued for 10 cents, 20 cents, 50 cents, $1, $2, $5 and $10.
Banks generally are open from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm Monday to Friday, and to 12:30 pm on Saturday, but some may have slightly shorter or longer hours of service. They are closed on Sundays and public holidays.
ATMs can be found nearly anywhere. They operates 24 hours a day and can be used to conduct the typical types of ATM transactions, including withdraw of local currencies. Some ATMs can be used to make cash withdrawals using Visa, Mastercard and American Express cards.
