Akureyri is the third largest city in Iceland, after Reykjavík and Kópavogur. Akureyri is also the capital of north Iceland, therefore it has a lot to offer since Akureyri services the neighboring towns. They have probably the best ski area in Iceland, Hlíðarfjall. The downtown of Akureyri looks pretty nice with a main street with some shops, restaurants and bars and a square. Its also popular amongst cruise ships to stop by the town and visit it for a day or two. A perfect day in Akureyri would be waking up early and be in Hlíðarfjall as soon as it opens to ski, after that have an ice cream at Brynju ís, walk up the stairs to Akureyrakirkja (the church), spend some time in walking the main street and eating a at Bautinn og Greifinn.

Travel Tips from people who've been to Akureyri
Akureyri is Icelands second largest town. Located up north in a fjord. Very nicely located. From the airport to town you can easily walk. The city itself is quite small and uneventfull. But plenty of hinking opporunities and whalewatching tours are offered at the local tourist office. But whats really worth doing is taking the ordinary bus further up  north to the smalles coastal villages and just walk around the dailylives. For exaple Dalvik is a cute village. Small and besides a harbour with small fish processing buildings, 1 supermarket, 1 do it yourselfshop, 1very bright white church and a fuelstation (where i ate the best Hot dog ever!!) there´s just plain nordic nature.

Akureyri is Icelands second town with 17 000 inhabitants. It is a very important port, and some cruise ships might go here. Akureyri is gorgeously located by a bay, and from this town you can make major trips in to the wild nature. The town is not big, but yet friendly open and fresh. The air is cool sine this is close to the arctic circle. In the town you can enjoy one of the best cafees in Icleand, Blaa Kannan cafe! Hotel Kea in the centre, is comfortable but not luxuary. From Akureyri you should go north for whale watching in Husavik! Icleand is one of the most wonderful countries to visit in Europe! And it's cheap now!

Where to sleep in Akureyri ?

The best place is definitely the IYH. Not to far from the centre, to the bus stop and the Bonus (supermaket), this place is quite big but cosy, really clean (better than some hotels...), with nice kitchens, living-rooms and even Internet access for free ! and it is not expensive comparing to other places in Iceland.
Enjoy your stay... or just your stop as there is not that much to do or see in Akueyri :)
