Hvammstangi is the main town in Húnaþing vestra county, situated on the eastern shore of Midfjordur fjord. The most important economic base is service and tourism. Two museum are located at Hvammstangi, the Museum of Local Trade, housing an excellent crafts gallery, and the Icelandic Seal Center (Selasetur Islands). Seals can be seen by boat, cruising from Hvammstangi harbor during the summer. Other services are a super market, garages, a quiet camping site, cafés, guesthouses, Wool factory shop, diner and fuel station, along with tourist information, health care center and a fine swimming pool. Population about 580.
