Iceland Natural Environment

Geography
Iceland has extensive volcanic and geothermal activity. The rift associated with the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, which marks the division between the European and North American tectonic plates, runs across Iceland from the southwest to the northeast.

This geographic feature is prominent at the Þingvellir National Park, where the promontory creates an extraordinary natural amphitheater. The site was the home of Iceland's parliament, the Alþing, which was first convened in 930.

About half of Iceland's land area, which is of recent volcanic origin, consists of a mountainous lava desert (highest elevation 2,119 m (6,952 ft) above sea level) and other wasteland. Eleven percent is covered by three large glaciers.

Twenty percent of the land is used for grazing, and only 1% is cultivated. An ambitious reforestation program is under way. Fossilized tree pollen and descriptions by the early settlers indicate that prior to human settlement in the 8th-10th century, trees covered about 30-40% of the island. Today, however, there are only small patches of the original birch forests left, the most prominent are Hallormsstaðaskógur and Vaglaskógur.

The inhabited areas are on the coast, particularly in the southwest; the central highlands are totally uninhabited.

Climate
Iceland has very mild, coastal weather. The average summer temperature in Reykjavik, the capital, is 11.8°C/53°F in July, with average highs of 24.3°C/76°F. Iceland has a pure, pollution-free environment. Industry is operated almost exclusively with clean hydroelectric and geothermal power. For more on nature in Iceland, click on the items on the right.

I have been all over Iceland, even outside of the few major cities, its a very interesting and beautiful country and most people are nice but most seem to just want you gone from their country . They have the best Milk in the world!! hahaha ,has something to do with the fact that the cattle have never been corrupted by any chemicals or pollutants from the outside world kind of like the whole country, they really are somewhat of a country in a bubble. Bring a variety of clothes mostly warm stuff you can layer as the weather changes every 15 mins, rain, snow, mist more snow WIND! etc

Reykjavik, Iceland
A city like no other, even though not much to offer-but its contradictions....a place that everyone should visit at least once. Small town, easily visited in one day, nightlife inavoidable-watch for excessive drinking broken glass everywhere...Iceland is best to visit over summer, due to weather, but Reykjavik itself any time. Expect bad service in kafes and restaurants. Transportation is also very bad, since everyone has a car, buses don´t go everywhere. Very gay friendly.

Hallormsstadhur, Iceland
I'm pretty sure you'd know if you were in this area, but anyway: be sure to take a walk through
Hallormsstaðarskogur , Iceland's largest forest. If you get lost, just stand up. :) But seriously, it's a very pleasant stroll if the weather is fine.

Just across Lagarfljót/Lögurinn is Hengifoss , which, at over 100m, is one of the highest waterfalls in Europe, I guess. The hike there takes about an hour (possibly more if you're not used to climbing steep hills) from a nearby parking lot; be sure to wear good shoes as you have to climb over rocks and jump streamlets as you get higher up (it looks like a deceptively smooth walk in the beginning). Also prepare for strong, wet, biting, cold wind, even in high summer.

Reykjavik, Iceland
the weather in Iceland can change at any moment. in one day you can have all from sun to snow. So my advice is: bring clothes for all kinds of weather. it is better to be safe than sorry.

Iceland
the weather in Iceland is very unpredictable. It can be sunny, windy, rainy, snowing and then sunny again in one day. Doesn´t matter if you are here in summer or winter bring a good jacket or coat with you. You will never know. It can be warm but all of a sudden you go from sunbathing to freezing :)
