First of all 1 day is way to short of a time to visit Iceland. But if that's the situation then I recommend the Golden Circle, many travel agencies offer this trip but you can also drive this route by yourself with a rental and a good map. You start going east from Reykjavík to Geysir, that's about 1 and half hour drive. From there you go little bit further north, for about 10 min, there is Gullfoss (Golden falls), that's one of the most powerful waterfall in Europe. From Gullfoss you go almost the same way back to Þingvellir (Thingvellir) where Europe and North America meet, you should walk a little bit in Almannagjá (The Rift) and check out the river Öxará that runs through it. If you have some spare time you can drive downtown Reykjavík but it has to really short if you want to go to the Blue Lagoon. You should be able to do that in 1 day if you wake up early.
