Travel Tips from people who've been to Delhi
Women, prepare to be harassed. Your bottom will be pinched, no matter how big, small, attractive, intimidating it is. Rickshaw man will try to rip you off - don't freak out, they do it to Delhites as well. The government emporiums are good to pick up things without the hassle of bargaining if you're tired of arguing over a rupee as they have fixed prices and most of the crafts have been hand picked for quality - you may pay a bit more but it's hassle free shopping. It's a 'love it or hate it' kinda city - best of luck. Good tip? (+1) Most airports in India have a pre-paid taxi booth where you give your destination, pay a fixed rate in advance and are then shown to your taxi for your onward journey. This is the most hassle-free and safe way to deal with arrival. Otherwise, be prepared for the huge throng of people you’ll be greeted by all keen to get you in their taxi or part you from your luggage – so they can either charge you for carrying it or run off to their taxi with it and expect you to pay whatever fare they demand. Best bet – ignore the lot of them till you have a chance to catch your breath and think. There will never be a shortage of taxis. Say no firmly. If you want a porter to carry your bag then don’t let it out your hand until you’ve agreed the price! Try not to look completely baffled & confused – they have a way of spotting bewildered tourists a mile off! Good tip? (0) Good tip? (0)
