The best time to visit Sikkim is October or November.  This is right after the rains stop, but before it gets too cold!  When the monsoon ends the views of the Himalaya are unbelievable.  You feel like you could reach out and touch Kanchenjunga. My favorite small town in Sikkim is called Pelling.
Hike from the town of Pelling to the ruins at Rabdentse, what was the second capitol of Sikkim.  The signs along the pathway will cheer you on as you make your way to the ruins (things like "do not get tired, great excitement awaits").  Also visit the monasteries in town, Pemayangtse (with its beautiful carving on the 3rd floor of "heaven") and Sanga Choeling (a welcome reward after a steep walk up hill).
The town is becoming more developed, but still retains its charm and the views are unparalleled! You can also set up longer treks from the town.
